Advanced Instrument for Measurement of the Burning Rate of Rocket Solid Propellants in Low Pressure Closed Vessel

APPLICATION

  • Quick assessment of ballistic behavior of new or modified rocket propellant formulations in their research, development and testing.
  • Quality control during manufacture of rocket propellants.
  • Determination of ageing influence on ballistic behavior of rocket propellants.
  • Surveillance of in-service rocket propellants.

  Determination of burning rate, i.e. gas pressure dependence u(p), is usually carried out using Crawford Bomb/Plant (strand burner) or subscale testing rocket motor. About 10 individual measurements are necessary to determine the burning rate in whole pressure range for both methods. Crawford plant is slow, expensive and complicated equipment which needs precise controlling of constant pressure and burning rate detection. The measurement using subscale rocket motor is slow and more dangerous due to unpredictable sample burning.

  The main advantage of the STOJAN VESSEL is the processing of measured pressure-time curves (see Fig. 1) using unique mathematical procedure based on ballistic equations. This procedure involves evaluation of burning rate vs. pressure dependency in a wide pressure range (see Fig. 2) using experimental data obtained from just one measurement at constant volume conditions. Pressure interval is given by ignition pressure (min. pressure) and amount of propellant in the vessel (max. pressure). The experimental results are in very good agreement with experimental values achieved from small testing rocket motors (see Fig. 3) and also with experimental results from multiple-shot measurements in the Crawford Bomb. Fast Stojan Vessel fully replaces slow and complicated Crawford Bomb (strand burner).
