ESD LS30-MIL large scale electrostatic discharge sensitivity test
Large scale Electrostatic Discharge Sensitivity Test according to STANAG 4490
The tester simulates accidental ignition of large charges of energetic materials (especially propellants) during manufacturing, processing, loading, or demilitarization by intensive electrostatic discharge.
Large-scale electrostatic spark sensitivity tester ESD LS30 is one of very few available instruments of this type. It is used for large-scale testing of sensitive explosives to electric discharge as defined in STANAG 4490 for testing of safety parameters of different types of energetic materials (high explosives, propellants or rocket motor, not applicable for primary explosives or pyrotechnics). It can be used also for evaluation to influence of temperature to sample sensitivity. There are two kinds of testing containers available for both compact and granular materials.
This test involves loading of an explosive sample weighing several hundred grams by a series of discharges with constant spark energy. The test simulates possible real-world scenario of accidental ignition of large charges of energetic materials (especially propellants) during manufacturing, processing, loading, or demilitarization activities. For safety reasons, this test must be carried out in detonation chambers, bunkers or in detonation pits (with necessary protection of the instrument) and the possible interactions (extent of reaction) of the electrostatic discharge, with the sample detected remotely by CCD cameras.
