HBA HEATING BLOCKS FOR ACCELERATED AGING

HBA HEATING BLOCKS FOR ACCELERATED AGING

The HBA is used to artificially accelerated the aging process of energetic materials by way of protracted storage of the sample at high temperatures. Under normal conditions, the rate of decomposition is slow (the lifetime of propellants or explosives is usually many years). Consequently, accelerated aging is used to predict the lifetime of an explosive sample. The aging period may last for weeks to months with temperatures usually reaching between 50 °C to 90 °C.

APPLICATION

The HBAis well suited for the artificial aging of firearm propellants, nitrocellulose, composite-base rocket propellants or any other energetic materials. Once the desired aging period is complete, the samples are ready for stability or sensitivity tests using any available method.

DESCRIPTION

The HBA is comprised of a heavy, aluminum heating block with 24 test tube holder holes. Each test tube is covered with a glass lid. The test samples are placed into the heating block. The temperature of the block is administered by a control unit which is comprised of an operational controller and a limit controller. The limit controller operates an independent alarm circuit which halts the heating process if temperatures were to accidentally increase above specified safety limits. Calibrated mercury thermometers or calibrated digital thermometers may be used to correct and control the temperature of the heating block.

The HBA’s standard heavy, aluminum heating block can hold and measure up to 24 samples (with individual time exposures for each one).  Heating blocks with a different desired number of holes are available on request.

ADVANTAGES & FEATURES

  • Safer operation--the aluminum heating block is much safer compared to a traditional reflux heating bath
  • High precision and accuracy of the heating block temperature
  • Customized heating blocks available upon request
  • Independent alarm circuit led by the limit controller eliminates prolonged accidental overheating

COMPLIANCE

  • STANAG 4117, 4527, 4541, 4620, AOP-48
